Permanent rates

Public utility rates approved by the BCUC are generally considered permanent, unless they are specifically identified as interim rates.

Permanent rates continue in effect indefinitely unless they are approved with a time limit, which is not common. Utilities generally prefer apply for new rates if their costs are rising, for example in times of inflation. But there are circumstances where a utility has an incentive not to apply for new rates; in these cases the BCUC may (but need not) direct the utility to apply for new rates.
