The BC Climate Change Accountability Act was originally the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act, passed in 2007.

Initially, its targets for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions from the 2007 base were:

• A 33 percent reduction by 2020 ; and
• An 80 percent reduction by 2050.

In 2018, the legislation was renamed, and the 2020 target was repealed. In its place, two new targets for GHG reductions from the 2007 base were added:

• 40 percent reduction by 2030; and
• 60 percent reduction by 2040.

The modified Act requires that the Minister responsible (currently the Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions) prepare a progress report and make that report public by the end of June each year. The most recent report is available here.
