The BC Climate Change Accountability Act was passed in 2007. Its targets for reducing BC’s greenhouse gas emissions are:
- 40 percent reduction by 2030;
- 60 percent reduction by 2040; and
- 80 percent reduction by 2050.
All targets are for reductions compared to 2007, the year the legislation was first passed.
The Act requires that the minister prepare a progress report and make that report public by the end of June each year. The most recent report is from 2023.
Previous targets
The Act was originally called the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Targets Act. Its targets, repealed in 2018, were:
- 33 percent reduction by 2020; and
- 80 percent reduction by 2050.
All targets are for reductions compared to 2007.
The government announced the change on June 12, 2018.
