In its inquiry into renewable natural gas, BCUC defined biogas as:
“the raw gas physically produced through the anaerobic digestion of biomass that is capable of being processed and upgraded to biomethane”
Biogas is produced from sources such as municipal sewage, landfills or agricultural waste. Biogas can be captured directly (e.g. from landfills), or the raw sewage or waste can be processed in an anaerobic digester to produce biogas.
Biogas cannot be used as a substitute for conventional natural gas until it has been purified into biomethane.
