Kanata Clean announced on June 16, 2026, that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with Hanwa Ocean regarding a floating LNG project in Prince Rupert, BC. The project is “expected” to have capacity of up to 12 million tonnes per annum, and require approximately US$15.7 billion in capital expenditures.
However, it is reported that Hanwa’s involvement is tied to its success bidding for a contract to build submarines for Canada. Since this contract was awarded to a German-Norwegian consortium, the status of the potential LNG project is unknown.
